Madison Avenue Rehabilitation Project
A team from Insituform Blue®, in conjunction with crews from Halcyon Construction Corporation, is currently working in the heart of the Big Apple to renew its Madison Avenue water lines. From 40th Street to 75th, 10,000 feet of 48 inch water main will be rehabilitated on a weekly basis over the weekends from now until the second week in September. The project will resume in April of 2009. Visit this page regularly to view updates on the progress of the Insituform Blue® water main rehabilitation project using the PuraGuard™ high density polyethylene (HDPE) product.
PuraGuard™ water main renewal offers a variety of benefits: - Improved
flow
- Improved
water quality
- Reduced
water leakage
- Prevention
of future pipeline failure.
Week 1: From July 26 to the evening of July 27, an Insituform Blue® team worked around the clock to install 530 feet of high density polyethylene pipe (HDPE) in the City that Never Sleeps starting Friday night between 58th and 61st Streets. Passersby were amazed at the low-dig technology, stopping frequently to ask questions and learn more about the PuraGuard™ process.
The pipe being renewed consisted of a 150-year-old cast iron water main running beneath Madison Avenue. The original pipe, 48 inches in diameter, had been out of service for close to ten years due to deterioration and leaking. The PuraGuard™ HDPE product renewed the line with less disturbance than traditional "dig and replace" methods, allowing for less disruption and quicker installation.
Week 2: Insituform Blue® was hard at work again the weekend of August 1 to renew the section of pipe running from 61st Street to 64th Street. The section of 48 inch diameter pipe running beneath Madison Avenue spanned 727 feet underground. Although the crew faced two significant storms with both wind and rain, weather was not an issue and did not affect the project schedule. Insituform Blue® was in and out within 27 hours.
Week 3: Although the project was pushed back a day due to a street festival, Insituform Blue® engineers and team members successfully installed 834 linear feet of PuraGuard™ HDPE in just one day on Sunday, August 10 while in the midst of multiple rain showers. In fact, streets were clear by 2 am on Monday before weekday traffic had even started to pick up. Check back next week for updated information, when crews are set to install another 822 feet of PuraGuard™ high-density polyethylene for drinking water pipe rehabilitation.
Week 4: Crews installed another 822 feet of HDPE liner from 64th Street to 67th Street on Madison Avenue.
Week 5: The weekend of August 22, Insituform Blue® team members were able to install more than 800 feet of pipeline for the third week in a row. That brought the total installation length up to 3,700 feet of PuraGuard™ liner to rehabilitate the existing water main. The Insituform Blue® team and city crews will be off Labor Day weekend.
Week 6: Insituform Blue® rehabilitated 765 feet of pipeline beneath Madison Avenue between 72nd and 75th streets.
Week 7: Insituform Blue® completed the last PuraGuard™ installation for 2008. To date, over 5,200 feet of water main has been renewed. Check back in April 2009 for more updates.
PuraGuard™ Installation The PuraGuard™ installation process is accomplished with minimal digging, as opposed to traditional methods. With Insituform Blue® low-dig technology, entire streets and sidewalks do not have to be dug up. Roads beneath which we are working can stay open, with traffic flowing freely.
PIPE IS FUSED. Lengths of HDPE pipe are welded together using a
fusion process.
PIPE IS FOLDED. HDPE pipe is
folded banded in place with plastic straps. PIPE IS INSERTED. The folded
pipe is inserted into the existing pipe from an entry pit. PIPE IS RE-ROUNDED. After
insertion, the folded pipe is filled with water and pressurized until bands
snap. PIPE IS RESTORED. The
new pipe reverts to its original shape and expands to form a close-fit with the
original pipe. PIPE IS RECONNECTED. End
fittings are attached to each end of the pipe and it is reconnected to the rest
of the system and resumes service.
Visit the PuraGuard™ page for more information on the product and its installation.
