Tampa Crew Completes Successful Project

Insituform's Tampa-area crew recently completed a difficult project for the City of Tampa, FL. The City requested that Insituform rehabilitate 885 feet of 72-inch pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe at the Howard F. Kern Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The City needed to repair this 30-year old transmission main after discovering that the top portion of the pipe was badly deteriorated. This pipe, along with one other large main, transmits all of the City's sewage from the plant's initial junction chamber to the plant's preliminary treatment process. The pipe carries between 40 and 70 million gallons of sewage a day and has a capacity of 150 MGD.

The Tampa crew rehabilitated the pipeline using Insituform's iPlus® Composite product, which is reinforced with carbon fibers for added strength and stiffness. The iPlus® Composite product is most suitable for the rehabilitation of large diameter sewers as its reinforcement allows for more flow capacity and thinner, stronger walls.

Because the project was on a very tight schedule, the coordination of all elements of the job—from ordering the tube to installing it—was essential to meet the City's deadlines. The superb communication between manufacturing, wet out and operations was one of the contributing factors that made the Tampa project successful. The crew completed the rehabilitation of the 72-inch pipes in three installations over six days. "We relied on Insituform's experience and expertise to provide us with the solution to repair this crucial transmission pipe and recognize the crew's hard work and determination," said Anthony Kasper, Chief Engineer for the City of Tampa.

Tim Ware, also City of Tampa, had rave reviews for the crew's performance on the job, “From the moment the crew came on site, everything went smoothly. The team kept us informed every step of the way.” Ware added, “They came into plant and did exactly what they said they were going to do.”
